The San Jose Mercury News has laid off 9 percent of its editorial staff.
The paper's union says 15 newsroom workers were cut Friday, bringing the Mercury News' total newsroom head count to 153.
Sylvia Ulloa, president of the San Jose Newspaper Guild, says five other editors and reporters had quit earlier this week and were not part of a buyout.
Ulloa says the paper's editorial staff has been cut by more than a third since Denver-based MediaNews Group Inc. took ownership of the paper a year and a half ago. Friday's cuts were the fourth since MediaNews took over the paper.
Mercury News president Mac Tully said the paper laid off a total of 34 workers Friday, including employees in non-newsroom positions such as circulation and classifieds.
He says a total of 50 jobs have been cut this week, including 16 people who took buyouts.
