The San Francisco Zoo is looking for help in naming its first baby gorilla born in a decade.
The infant gorilla was abandoned by its mother at birth on Dec. 8. It has since been reared by hand while zookeepers train an adult female gorilla to serve as a surrogate mother.
The zoo presented the 11-pound gorilla to the public for the first time on Thursday, and the zoo announced a "Name the Baby" contest on its Web site
www.sfzoo.org, as well as an online gift registry for its newest arrival.
The contest runs from February 12 through March 5 and is open to children five years and older and to adults.
But the contest has a twist: the baby gorilla's name will not be chosen by zoo keepers; instead, the animal's father, Oscar Jonesy, a dominant silverback gorilla, will get the final say.
On March 11, a panel of judges appointed by the zoo will present the adult gorilla with five finalist names, each attached to sticks of bamboo. The first stick he chooses will be the winning name.
