SF Gas Leak Briefly Prompts Shelter-In-Place Alert

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / BCN) ― A shelter-in-place was lifted at about 12:40 p.m. following a gas leak that occurred Friday in the area of Sutter and Octavia streets, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The rupture was reported at about 10:50 a.m. when a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crew struck a pipe. The crew was working to connect a gas main to a new construction project when they hit the line, according to PG&E spokesman Joe Molica.

"When we dug into the line we immediately went about pinching that line as quickly and safely as possible," Molica said.

The leak forced the closure of Sutter Street between Octavia and Gough streets, however Sutter Street partially reopened at about 12:50 p.m., according to Molica. A section of Octavia that was closed has since reopened.

Fire crews were released from the scene and gas to the ruptured main was shut off.

Molica said the accident occurred because crews were expecting the gas line to be encased in a steel pipe. PG&E will further investigate the cause of the leak.

"We take this type of incident very seriously and recognize this is an inconvenience for our customers," Molica said.

Gas service that was turned off for two apartment buildings was expected to be restored by about 3 p.m.
