The average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in San Francisco has reached four dollars, marking a record-setting price for the city, the American Automobile Association of Northern California announced Monday.
"While gas prices may drop a penny or two between now and Memorial Day, real relief for customers most likely won't be realized until the end of summer,'' AAA spokesman Michael Geeser said.
Gas in the city hit theĀ $4 mark on Saturday and remained there through the weekend, AAA reported.
The statewide average price for a gallon of unleaded gas is $3.91, a 52-cent jump from one year ago, according to AAA.
The planned maintenance period for California refineries where gas is reformulated for warmer summer months is complete, but some refineries are still coming back on line, affecting the supply throughout the state, officials reported.
AAA advised commuters to shop aggressively for the lowest price to reduce the amount of money they spend on fuel. To view information on prices at gas stations, visit
