It's usually a good thing to be number one, but not when it comes to gas prices.
The Chronicle newspaper reported Friday that sometime in the coming week, San Francisco is expected to be the first major city in the U.S. to pay an average of $4 for a gallon of regular gas.
This milestone is fueled by crude oil prices that continue to climb to their highest levels ever.
Many Bay Area drivers are searching for alternatives to paying at the pump including public transportation and trading in their gas hogs for compact vehicles.
