As of Wednesday, composting is now mandatory in San Francisco, and city officials want to make sure landlords are providing their tenants with all the proper disposal bins.
The new law doesn't mean that the garbage police will be roaming the streets to fine people if they inadvertently put orange peels in the wrong waste bin.
"The intent is not to go after single family folks or even people in apartment buildings," said San Francisco Department of Environment Director Jared Blumenfeld. "The goal of the ordinance and even our enforcement will be to make sure that everyone has the service, which isn't the case today."
The law now in effect targets building owners by requiring them to provide green waste bins for composting, blue for recycling and black for trash.
Martin owns a building with 14 tenants in North Beach and said they already have been asking him for composting bins. "Especially in San Francisco, everybody's pretty up on the environment, and I encourage it by all means."
Building owners who don't comply will at first be warned, and then face fines.
