400 San Francisco City Workers Getting Pink Slips
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / BCN) ―
About 400 San Francisco workers were finding out that they had lost their jobs Friday.
Workers were being given notice Friday, and released from service in February as part of more than $118 million in budget cuts as well as revenue increases to fend off a projected $575.6 million deficit for the coming fiscal year.
Mayor Gavin Newsom warned workers Tuesday that cuts would be coming soon. Newsom proposed $118.29 million in "solutions" to the budget shortfall, $71 million in cuts and $47 million in new revenues, made up of unspent funds from the previous fiscal year and $12 million from the Health Department. The city's Health Department is cutting 25-percent of it's budget, so a significant portion of layoff notices were expected to be handed out there Friday. The cuts also included elimination of 313 vacant city positions.
The Public Works Department is also making some cuts. Mayor Newsom said they tried to make administrative changes and worked hard not to affect workers directly involved in providing services.
