Police arrested a 21-year-old suspected gang member Wednesday afternoon on three counts of murder and impounded his car believed involved in a San Francisco road rage shooting that killed a father and two sons.
Edwin Ramos of El Sobrante was being held without bail in the San Francisco County Jail after being arrested at his home, San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong said at an evening news conference.
Police believe the shooting deaths of 49-year-old Tony Bologna and his two sons occurred after a traffic altercation Sunday afternoon in the city's Excelsior district with as many as three people in another car.
Ramos' arrest came one day after police released a composite sketch of the suspected gunman from that other car, described as a man with dark short-cropped hair, a mustache, large build and possibly of Latin decent.
Fong offered condolences to the Bologna family and praised the efforts of police detectives and the public in reporting some "helpful" tips.
She said additional assistance came with the earlier arrest of an unidentified person who provided information that led to the impounding of Ramos' car, which is "very similar" to the Chrysler 300M sought in connection with the shootings.
Police said Ramos denied he committed the murders when interviewed by detectives after members of the SFPD gang task force, assisted by Richmond police, seized his vehicle.
Bologna and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16, were found shot inside their car just after 3 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Maynard and Congdon streets.
Investigators said they were driving home and were forced to stop in the intersection, blocking the path of another car. Bologna backed up to allow the other driver through.
But someone from that car shot at Bologna's vehicle, killing him and son Michael instantly. Bologna's youngest son, Matthew, was pronounced dead Tuesday evening at San Francisco General Hospital after his family took him off life-support.
"I only know what I lost, my husband and my kids," a grieving Danielle Blogna told CBS 5. "You just can't imagine. I'm feeling empty. Where do I go from here? I don't know what to do."
