A 5-year-old boy was hurt late Monday afternoon when a door "came flying off" the Cyclone ride at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
Witnesses say the 3-foot by 4-foot entrance door to the ride fell off around 4:40 p.m. and struck the child in the leg, injuring him. Paramedics treated the boy at the scene and released him to his parents.
The Cyclone, which tilts and spins, along with two other nearby rides were all closed following the malfunction.
Officials with the Beach Boardwalk say that the Cyclone was in its fifth season of operation and all rides are inspected each morning. They also say the ride will be closed indefinitely.
"We're proud of the record we've had. We haven't an incident like this in a very long time. And we're going to be working real hard, over the next few days to make sure it doesn't happen again," said Chris Reyes of the Beach Boardwalk.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified and planned to investigate to determine the cause of the mishap, officials said.
