Caltrans Repairs Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Damage
RICHMOND (BCN) ―
Work to repair Richmond-San Rafael Bridge fenders damaged by an oil barge several months ago has been completed three weeks ahead of schedule and under budget, according to the California Department of Transportation.
The fenders were damaged Jan. 10 when the oil barge Cascade hit the bridge's Pier 35 fenders, Caltrans reported. Oil was not leaked into the bay as a result of the accident, but "extensive damage" was caused to the fenders, according to Caltrans.
After assessing the damage, Caltrans engineers decided on the necessary repairs and hired California Engineering Contractors to complete an estimated $6 million in work.
The project was expected to be completed around June 1, but was finished Thursday at a final cost of less than $3 million, according to Caltrans. The project was expedited because low tides allowed workers to pour and set concrete more often than originally expected, Caltrans reported.
