Woman's Body Found Near Richmond Elementary School

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

RICHMOND (CBS 5 / BCN) ― Police were investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a ravine near a Richmond elementary school on Monday as a possible homicide.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office identified the woman as 41-year-old Stephenie Wright and described her as a transient.

Her body was discovered around 6:30 a.m. by a passerby who reported to police that there was a person down in the Richmond Greenway, a path that runs parallel to Ohio Avenue, police Lt. Mark Gagan said.

Arriving officers found Wright, who appeared to have suffered blunt
force wounds, Gagan said. She was located in a ravine alone the path, about 50 feet from Lincoln Elementary School at 29 Sixth Street.

"We don't know exactly where or when the crime occurred," Gagan said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday to determine a cause of death, according to the coroner's office.

No suspect information was immediately available in the apparent homicide, which would mark the city's 26th murder of the year.

Police worked with the school Monday to ensure that students did not witness the investigation, but classes were held as scheduled. The school's auditorium, which was the closest building on the campus to the spot where the body was found, was closed for the day, Gagan said.

Paul Ehara, a spokesman for West Contra Costa Unified School District, said school staff and the principal also communicated with families of the students to address their concerns.
