Bay Area Repair Shops, Tailors Thrive In Recession
Kiet Do, Reporting.
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS 5) ―
In this recession, not everyone is hurting due to the down economy. More people are taking stock at what they already have, with repair shops and tailors thriving as a result.
Car dealerships are closing and Detroit automakers may be laying off thousands. But at Helming's Auto Repair in Mountain View, mechanics say they are doing brisk business fixing the cars that people used to trade in for new ones. According to the Automotive Service Association, three out of every five shops say repairs were up last year.
The same can be said for bicycle repairs. Typically this is the slow season for repairs, but demand is up at Mikes Bikes in Palo Alto. Service manager Kenny Ellis said those customers riding out the recession on two wheels has been good for business.
And retailers such as Mervyn's may be out of business, but at Savannah Tailoring, both the incoming and outgoing racks of alterations are full. Savanna Pham said business is the busiest she's seen it since they opened three years ago, with customers bringing in old clothes and items from thrift stores.
It looks as though the big squeeze is turning us into a fix-it nation, where the best place to shop is your own closet or garage.
