8 De Anza Athletes Suspended In Rape Investigation
CUPERTINO (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ―
Eight members of the De Anza College baseball team have been suspended in connection with a party where an alleged rape took place.
There have been no arrests or names released, but sheriff's officials said they have interviewed several baseball players and other students from De Anza College who attended the party.
The victim was allegedly assaulted early Sunday at a residence in the Burbank District, an unincorporated part of San Jose, said Sgt. Ed Wise. She was not a student at De Anza, Wise said.
The girl was transported to a local hospital sometime after the alleged rape and the alleged crime was reported by the hospital, Wise said.
"De Anza has been very cooperative as well as many of the witnesses," Wise said.
De Anza spokeswoman Marisa Spatafore said the school was "deeply disturbed about the allegations."
The team's game scheduled for Tuesday against Canada College was canceled and Monday's team practice was in the form of a meeting about the alleged incident and overall player conduct, Spatafore said.
The baseball season has not been canceled but the school is taking things day by day, Spatafore said.
"We feel the students time is better spent on the investigation," Spatafore said.
She added, "We are deeply concerned for the alleged victim." Counseling has been made available to any concerned students, according to Spatafore.
Any team members who don't cooperate with the investigation will face sanctions from the school, and anyone involved in the incident will be suspended, she said.
"We don't really have anything to say because nothing is proven," De Anza infielder David Abraham Jr. told the San Jose Mercury News. "Everything is alleged."
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Sgt. Paula McAllister at (408) 808-4500.
