Sonoma Co. Sheriff Sued For Alleged Racial Profing

SANTA ROSA (AP) ― A federal lawsuit accuses the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department of unlawful detentions and racial profiling of Latinos suspected of being illegal immigrants.

The lawsuit was filed Friday by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Committee for Immigrant Rights of Sonoma County.

The two groups claim the Sheriff's Department collaborates with federal immigration officials to stop and search people who look Latino, interrogate them about their immigration status and jail them without legal basis.

California doesn't allow local sheriffs and police to enforce immigration law.

Sheriff Bill Cogbill had not seen a copy of the lawsuit Friday, but said its basic accusations were all untrue.
