Officer Hurt In Half Moon Bay Party Brawl
HALF MOON BAY (CBS 5 / BCN) ―
A Half Moon Bay police officer was injured Saturday night while trying to arrest several people who had apparently gotten in a fight at a party at the town's I.D.E.S. Hall, Half Moon Bay Police Chief Don O'Keefe said Tuesday.
An officer in the area responded to reports of a fight at a quinceanera party, a traditional Hispanic celebration for a girl's 15th birthday, at about 10:30 p.m.
While trying to detain one person, the officer was struck in the face and suffered from bruises, O'Keefe said. He did not need to be hospitalized.
As that officer tried to arrest the suspect, more people at the party got involved in the brawl and at least one person tried to grab the officer's gun, according to O'Keefe.
"It was a very chaotic situation," he said. "The officer was trying to defend himself and arrest the suspect."
Other officers responded to the scene and managed to arrest two suspects, 29-year-old Carlos Saldana of Half Moon Bay and 34-year-old Felipe Macias of Pescadero, O'Keefe said. Both were arrested on suspicion of assault on a police officer.
He said the Police Department were searching for a third suspect involved in the fight and would likely arrest him Tuesday night.
It's still unclear what sparked the fight, O'Keefe said.
"There are lot of conflicting statements" from witnesses, he said. "It's still under investigation."
