Calif. Proposes Facilities For Prison Medical Care

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch
SACRAMENTO (CBS 5 / AP) ― California prison officials have submitted a construction plan intended to expand medical and mental health treatment for inmates.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation filed the plan Friday in response to a federal court order.

It includes a 1,734-bed facility in Stockton at a cost of $1 billion. The construction would be paid for out of a $7.8 billion pot of money the Legislature set aside to reduce prison overcrowding two years ago.

Three former juvenile facilities also would be turned into treatment centers for adult inmates, while hundreds of beds would be added to existing facilities.
