Heated Debate Over Plans For Presidio Development

(CBS 5) A large, intense crowed turned out Monday to do battle over the future of the Presidio.

A capacity crowed on hand for the Presidio Development debate were weighing the merits of a planned 100,000 square foot museum planned to house the art collection of Gap Founders Don and Doris Fisher.

Supporters say the building is a fabulous gift to the city. Opponents say that may be true, but the building could be placed elsewhere.

Included in the proposal is a 95,000 square foot hotel, and an expanded Presidio Theater. On Monday, residents on both sides were given two minutes to make their case.

"We would be gaining access to one of the most significant, contemporary collections in the world, again for free, and in perpetuity," said one speaker

"It"s proposed as a free standing building at the head of the parade ground, and as such would be the signature building of the Presidio. This is not appropriate," said another.

Our video report has more on the public reaction to the controversial proposal.
