Stanford Works On Safer Prenatal Genetic Test

Many pregnant women face an agonizing decision. If they undergo certain tests to determine their baby's genetic health, they run the risk of losing the baby. But Bay Area researchers may have discovered a safer option.
Scientists at Stanford have figured out a way to test for major chromosomal defects using a simple blood test. The researchers counted tiny molecules floating around in the blood of pregnant women, which are fragments of DNA that actually belong to the fetus. If the research holds up, the test should be available in a few years.
