The Federal Aviation Administration reported Saturday that a glider and a small plane collided in mid-air, killing both pilots.
Authorities were notified of the crash around 11:24 a.m.
The planes took off shortly after 11 a.m. Apparently the glider struck the Piper 25 tow plane as both plans were doing a visual flyover above the landing strip at Crazy Creek Soaring, a full-service gliderport near Middletown, off Highway 29.
The planes came down about 100 yards apart.
Sources say both pilots were very experienced. One lived in the Bay Area, the other lived with his family in Middletown.
The gliderport lies in the center of a 600-acre privately owned ranch, and has a 4000x150 foot grass runway.
No word yet as to what caused the collision.
