Petaluma Pedestrian Hit & Killed By Car

PETALUMA (BCN) ― Petaluma police said Wednesday afternoon alcohol appears to have been a factor in the death of a transient who was struck by a car while crossing North McDowell Boulevard Tuesday night.

The 43-year-old Petaluma man died at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital at 11:53 p.m., the Sonoma County coroner's office reported. Petaluma police Sgt. Ken Savano said the pedestrian's name is being withheld until his next of kin are notified.

The man was crossing from the west to the east side of North McDowell Boulevard, between Lynch Creek Way and Community Center Drive, when the collision occurred around 8:45 p.m., Savano said.

The pedestrian apparently walked in front of a 2002 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle driven by Jodi Gnadt, 47, of Rohnert Park, who was traveling north in the right lane, Savano said.

It does not appear the driver was speeding, Savano said.

The pedestrian is known by police as a local transient, Savano said. He has family in the area.

Officers found the pedestrian in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The road's northbound lanes were closed until about 11:30 p.m.

The collision remains under investigation, and witnesses are asked to contact Petaluma Traffic Officer Rob Hawkins at (707) 776-3722.
