9 Injured In Pepper Spray Incident At SJ Airport

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― Nine TSA agents were injured at Mineta San Jose Wednesday after a passenger's pepper spray accidentally discharged as security personnel confiscated it.

Two of the Transportation Security Administration employees were being treated at the Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara because of the discharge. Mike Colgan reports the seven others were treated by fire department paramedics at the scene.

A passenger at the main checkpoint to Terminal C alerted agents that he forgot to remove a pepper spray container from his bag. It was inadvertently discharged around 11:30 a.m. by a TSA agent as she placed it in a hazmat container, according to airport spokesman Rich Dressler.

Dressler said the passenger was fully cooperating with security personnel prior to the discharge, and no passengers or airport staff were affected by the pepper spray.

The line at the Terminal C checkpoint was running smoothly. No other airport operations were affected by the situation.
