Girl Dies After Falling Off Horse In Peninsula

REDWOOD CITY (BCN) ― A 5-year-old girl died Thursday after falling off a horse while taking riding lessons at an equestrian center in unincorporated San Mateo County near Redwood City, according to the sheriff's office.

Officers responded to the Clermont Equestrian Center at Cypress Ridge located at 12670 Skyline Blvd. and found the girl unconscious, sheriff's deputies said.

She had been riding a horse that she'd ridden about five times before when shortly after 6 p.m. the horse became spooked and bucked the girl off, according to sheriff's deputies.

As the girl fell, the horse dragged her for several seconds and kicked her in the head, sheriff's deputies said.

She was transported to Stanford Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police do not know what spooked the horse.
