73-Yr-Old Palo Alto Man Dies In Fight

PALO ALTO (BCN) ― Authorities arrested a 46-year-old man early Saturday morning on suspicion of killing his mother's boyfriend Friday night during a fight at a Palo Alto home, police said.

Officers responded to the home in the 2500 block of Waverley Street at about 9:10 p.m. on reports that a fight had broken out and that at least one subject had a knife, according to police.

Arriving officers detained Herman Van Bragt, of Auburn, in front of the home, police said.

Officers then entered the residence and located the body of a 73-year-old man.

Van Bragt, who sustained non-life threatening injuries in the fight, reportedly alerted police of the incident.

At 3 a.m., he was arrested on charges of homicide and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

Sgt. Sandra Brown said that the victim resided in the home with Van Bragt's mother.

The cause of the fight remains under investigation.

The two men were the only people at the home at the time of the fight, according to Brown.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of his family.

The incident marks Palo Alto's first homicide of 2008, Brown said.
