SF Green Tech Consultant Killed Skiing In Tahoe
TAHOE CITY (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ―
A San Francisco man who founded a green technology business was killed when he slammed into a tree while skiing at Homewood Mountain Resort near Lake Tahoe, authorities said Monday.
Tyler A. Palmer, 37, was found upside down in a snow bank under a tree on a black diamond run at the ski resort, called the Hobbit Land run. He was discovered about 2 p.m. Sunday by passing skiers, said Placer County Sheriff's Sgt. John Giovanini.
A ski patrolman helped dig him out and started CPR until paramedics arrived, but those efforts were unsuccessful. Palmer was declared dead at the scene about 45 minutes later.
Authorities said Palmer was skiing in bounds on the expert run, but the weather may have made for low visibility.
"I don't know what the conditions were like out there exactly, other than that there was snowfall," said Sgt. Giovanini. "The snow was falling moderately at least, and there were gusts of wind, but we have had on and off white-out conditions."
Palmer's death was being called accidental by the sheriff's office; deputies believe he may have suffocated. An autopsy was pending.
Palmer was the founder of a consulting firm called GreenMountain Engineering, described on its website as a socially responsible company that aims to solve engineering problems for clean technology and biomedical companies.
Tyler served on the San Francisco Clean Technology Advisory Council and was a regional representative for the group Engineers Without Borders.
