Body Of San Jose Man Found In Oregon River

CURRY COUNTY, Ore. (BCN) ― The body of a 41-year-old San Jose man was found floating in an Oregon river a week after he was presumed drowned in the rough and murky waters in early June, a sheriff's office dispatcher said Wednesday.

Robert Scott Blight's body was spotted by a rafter June 8 in the Rogue River near the mouth of Tate Creek in southern Oregon, according to the Curry County Sheriff's Office.

Marine deputies located the body at about 3:50 p.m. just above the Clay Hill Rapids. They reportedly had seconds to retrieve the body before it was swallowed by the rapids.

Blight was believed to have drowned June 1 when he never resurfaced from a swim while rafting down the Rogue River with his friend Dino James Fry, also 41.

The two stopped for lunch, but when they were eating, their raft drifted away from shore and the two decided to swim across the river from the south side to the north side where the Rogue River trail is located.

Fry, who was wearing a life jacket, made it safely to the north side of the river. But Blight, who was without a life jacket, never resurfaced, Sgt. Ted Longton said.

Around 12:15 p.m. the sheriff's office was notified of the incident and launched air and water searches.

Daily searches of the river continued until Blight's body was found, according to the sheriff's office.

When the drowning occurred the river was flowing at an increased rate due to snow melting on the mountains, which also created difficulty in the search, Longton said.
