Darfur Activists To Join SF Olympic Torch Protests
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
Activists working to end the genocide in Darfur are urging people to join the protest of the Olympic torch as it passes through San Francisco next week.
The Darfur protesters will be in addition to demonstrators showing support for Tibet's fight for independence from China.
More than 1,000 protestors are expected to converge on San Francisco next week from all across the country, said Isaac Shapiro of the Save Darfur Coalition.
"China has not played a productive role with respect to the conflict in Darfur," said Shapiro.
San Francisco is the only location in North America on the torch relay route.
The relay will begin at 1 p.m. on April 9 with an opening ceremony at McCovey Cove.
Approximately 80 torch bearers will carry the torch from AT&T Park, then down the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf, and back up Bay Street to the Embarcadero where the route ends in front of the Ferry Building for a concluding ceremony at Justin Herman Plaza.
