Five gallons of oil that spilled from a tank vessel into the San Francisco Bay on Saturday took about five hours to dissipate, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
About 7:30 a.m. the Coast Guard received a report that the crew of the tank vessel, "Abul Kalam Azad," had noticed a sheen in the water around the vessel in the waters near Treasure Island.
The oil reportedly had spilled due to the vessel's salt water cooling system, which malfunctioned after lube oil contaminated the salt water discharge and entered the bay, according to the Coast Guard.
The crew subsequently shut down the equipment to prevent further leakage.
A boat from the National Response Corporation, the agency contracted by the vessel to conduct clean up, also responded and placed a boom around the vessel as a precautionary measure, the Coast Guard reported.
The 500-yard sheen of oil had cleared from the waters by about 12:40 p.m., according to the Coast Guard.
The vessel remained anchored in the bay while its repairs were completed, the Coast Guard said.
