A tree dedication and remembrance ceremony for five officers in Martinez and Oakland who were killed in the line of duty was held Wednesday in a park in Pleasant Hill.
The ceremony memorialized Martinez police Sgt. Paul Starzyk, who was killed on September 6, 2008 while confronting an armed domestic violence suspect in Martinez, and four Oakland officers, Sgts. Mark Dunakin, Ervin Romans and Daniel Sakai and Officer John Hege, who were killed in a confrontation with a wanted parolee in Oakland on March 21, 2009.
Among those in attendance were the widows of two of the fallen officers. Pleasant Hill Mayor Karen Mitchoff, Martinez Police Chief Tom Simonetti and Assistant Chief of the Oakland Police Department Howard Jordan spoke during the ceremony, along with Recreation and Park Board member Sandy Bonato and Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Jessica Braverman.
The Pleasant Hill Park ceremony was sponsored donations from the Pleasant Hill community.
