CoCo Deputy Shoots Man Who Tried To Run Him Over

EL SOBRANTE (CBS 5 / BCN) ― A Contra Costa County sheriff's deputy shot a 25-year-old driver who attempted to run him over near an apartment complex in El Sobrante, the sheriff's office said.

Cary Menghi-Griffin, who remained hospitalized in stable condition at John Muir Medical Center Sunday, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest that was drug related, according to Lee.

The incident happened after deputies responded to reports of a fight at the Creekside Terrace Apartments complex in the 5000 block of San Pablo Dam Road around 7:40 p.m. Saturday, Lee said.

Menghi-Griffin allegedly drove toward one of the deputies.

That deputy, who has not been named, was struck by the vehicle and shot Menghi-Griffin, Lee said.

The deputy was treated for minor injuries.

The sheriff's office and Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office were investigating the case.
