Oak. Staff Teachers, Counselors Spared Layoffs
OAKLAND (BCN) ―
Some teachers in Oakland can breathe a sigh of relief.
The Oakland Unified School District is facing budget cuts, but district officials announced Monday that permanent classroom teachers, counselors and librarians would be spared from getting preliminary layoff notices.
By law, districts must inform teachers by March 15 if there is any possibility of a layoff.
Some school secretaries and other non-teaching staff will be given new assignments or lose their jobs.
Oakland school officials say they need to look at other ways to trim the budget because of a proposed reduction in education money from the state.
They're considering cutting spending for low-income students and English language instruction, as well as school libraries, sports and electives.
