Person Flies Off Overpass In Hwy 24 Wreck
OAKLAND (BCN) ―
A person suffered major injuries after being thrown from an overturned Penske rental truck on westbound state Highway 24 into a parking lot near the Rockridge Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Oakland Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The solo-vehicle crash was reported at about 1 a.m. on Highway 24 near the College Avenue exit, according to CHP Officer Robert Haven.
The medium-sized rental truck was carrying a driver and a passenger when it overturned on the right hand shoulder, throwing one of the occupants from the vehicle on the highway into the BART parking lot below, Haven said.
Both occupants were taken to a local hospital, according to Haven, who did not know if the driver or passenger was the person thrown from the vehicle.
Both victims are expected to survive, he said.
The crash caused authorities to close the two right lanes of the highway briefly to clean up coolant that had spilled from the truck onto the roadway, Haven said.
The lanes were closed at around 2:30 a.m. and reopened at about 3:10 a.m.
