Oakland police on Friday identified a man who was shot and killed by a police officer Thursday night as 20-year-old Gary King of Oakland.
Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Poirier said the officer who shot King was Sgt. Patrick Gonzalez, a 10-year veteran of the department who is a supervisor of the crime reduction team in North Oakland, the area where Thursday night's incident occurred.
Poirier said Gonzalez, who was on patrol in the 5400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way about 4:45 p.m. Thursday, tried to talk to King because he thought King fit the description of the suspect in the death of Ronald Jimmey Spears, 29, who was killed about 1 a.m. Aug. 21.
Spears was near 55th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way by a gunman who asked him for a ride.
Poirier said King and Gonzalez "got into a violent fight" and the officer used a stun gun to try to subdue King but it was ineffective.
King then reached into his waistband, prompting Gonzalez to fire two shots at him, Poirier said.
King was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he was pronounced dead. Gonzalez was not injured in the incident.
Poirier said King was armed with a loaded gun.
Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said at the scene Thursday night that Gonzalez was patrolling the area, which is near Children's Hospital Oakland, because there have been several homicides in the area recently.
In addition to the death of Spears, 21-year-old Kikhiesha Brooks of Berkeley was killed in a drive-by shooting near 59th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way about 1 p.m. July 22.
As standard procedure for the Oakland police officers who have shot suspects, Gonzalez has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
