Some Oakland community members expressed outrage following a fatal, officer-involved shooting in the 5400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way earlier this week.
Friends and family of 20-year old Gary King said the man was not carrying a gun when he was shot to death on Thursday afternoon.
Sgt. Pat Gonzalez, a 10-year veteran of the Oakland Police Department, stopped King on the street because he resembled a homicide suspect. The two got into a struggle and according to Gonzalez, he shot King twice when he saw the man reach into his waistband.
Some witnesses have said that King was unarmed, and was actually running from Gonzalez when he was shot. Police have said King was armed with a loaded gun, which they recovered at the scene.
Because this is the third time Gonzalez has opened fire on a suspect, and his second fatal shooting, some in the community have called the incident police brutality.
As is standard procedure for Oakland police officers who have shot suspects, Gonzalez has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
