Fire At Oakland School Causes $40K In Damage

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

OAKLAND (BCN) ― Art supplies in an Oakland elementary school classroom that were intentionally ignited are believed to have caused a blaze there Thursday night, a fire department spokesman said Friday.

The one-alarm fire was reported in the portable classroom at Sobrante Park Elementary School, located at 470 El Paseo Drive, around 8 p.m. Thursday, Oakland fire Lt. David Brue said.

The flames were controlled by 8:40 p.m.

The school's principal was interviewed on Friday but it was unknown if
the teacher assigned to the classroom had been interviewed, according to Brue.

No injuries were reported and the school is open today because the only building damaged was the standalone classroom, Brue said.

The structure was not destroyed, but sustained about $30,000 in damage, and the contents about $10,000 in damage, according to Brue.

A motive has not been determined, Brue said.
