An Oakland police officer shot and killed a homicide suspect who tried to pull out a gun as the pair struggled in the middle of a busy city street late Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
The fatal officer-involved shooting occured about 4:50 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 54th Street, near Children's Hospital Oakland.
The officer - a supervisor with the police department's crime reduction team - attempted to question and detain the man when a struggle occured, police spokesman Roland Holmgren said.
According to police, the officer was unsuccessful in his effort to use a stun gun to subdue the suspect. As the struggle continued, police said the officer was forced to shoot after the suspect attempted to pull a gun from his waistband.
Witnesses said the officer shot the man twice and police confirmed multiple shots were fired. The shooting victim was taken to a local hospital, where he died a short time later.
Police said they recovered a loaded handgun at the scene that belonged to the suspect.
Holmgren declined to identify the deceased man or the officer, a 10-year police veteran who wasn't injured but was "a little shaken up by the incident."
