Veteran Oakland Police Officer Commits Suicide

The Oakland Police Department said Monday that Officer Murray Hoyle committed suicide in an unincorporated area of Brentwood on Saturday.

Hoyle, 51, was an officer assigned to the Patrol Division and had been with the department for more than 28 years, according to police officials.

Oakland Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan said in a statement, "The sudden loss of Officer Murray Hoyle is a shock to the department and the citizens of Oakland. He was a valuable member of our team and will be missed. Our prayers and thoughts will be with his family."

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums said, "Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the families, friends, loved ones and colleagues of Officer Murray Hoyle during this very difficult time."

Dellums said, "Officer Hoyle was a dedicated police officer who served our communities for nearly 28 years and will be deeply missed by all of those whose lives he touched."

Oakland police officials said Hoyle started working for the department on Aug. 10, 1981, in the patrol division and had a reputation for being tough on driving under the influence suspects and in traffic enforcement.

The department said Hoyle transferred to the traffic division, where he enjoyed enforcing traffic laws and riding a police motorcycle. He later transferred back to patrol and was well-known for working in the Montclair District, police officials said.

Hoyle is survived by his wife and three children, ages 22, 15 and 11. Police officials said information about funeral services for Hoyle will be announced soon.

Hoyle is the second Oakland police officer to commit suicide in the last 13 months.

Lt. Derrick Norfleet, who was 45, committed suicide at his home in Vallejo on July 30, 2008.
