Oakland's Monarch Academy Receives National Honor

OAKLAND (BCN) ― An Oakland school will receive a national honor for demonstrating significant academic improvement this week, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell announced Thursday.

Monarch Academy, a charter school authorized by the Oakland Unified School District, will receive the National Distinguished Title I School Recognition Program Award.

"Monarch Academy is being honored for closing the achievement gaps among its significant subgroups, including students living in poverty, disabled students or those learning English," O'Connell said in a prepared statement.

The school is among 71 schools nominated by each state nationwide. The schools will be recognized at the 2008 National Title I Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, running through Sunday.

The California Department of Education will additionally honor the school at a gala dinner and reception in Los Angeles on April 22.

Monarch Academy is part of the Aspire Public Schools network. About 92 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals program.
