The Federal Bureau of Investigation joined Oakland police on Tuesday in looking for a 5-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who went missing after being left in a car in the city's Rockridge district.
Five-year-old Hasanni Campbell was last seen in the area of 6000 College Avenue outside a shoe store where his aunt works. She has custody of the boy. He has been missing since 4:15 p.m. Monday.
The man watching the boy at the time told authorities that he left the car to unlock the store door to give the boy, who wears braces on his legs, easier access. He said the boy was gone when he returned.
Officers said that it was unlikely that Hasanni had gone far on his own, given his difficulty walking. Police initially described the man as Hasanni's father but later said he was a "caretaker."
Officers brought in rescue dogs to help in the initial search through Monday evening.
Police described the boy as black, standing 3-feet-tall and weighing 30 pounds. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray pants.
Anyone with information about the boy's whereabouts was asked by authorities to call the Oakland police youth services division at (510) 238-3641, or call 911 if he is believed to be in immediate danger.
