Oakland PD Seeks Clues In Girl's Fatal Hit & Run

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― Oakland police continue to look for the driver of a dark-colored sedan who is believed to be responsible for a hit-and-run crash that killed an 11-year-old girl near a middle school Friday morning, a police spokesman said.

The girl, a student at Frick Middle School, was exiting a bus shortly before 8:10 a.m. at the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and 64th Avenue and was walking in the marked crosswalk when she was struck by the vehicle, according to police Officer Jeff Thomason.

The driver of the vehicle then fled southbound on 64th Avenue, Thomason said. No arrests have been made.

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums released a statement Friday afternoon deploring the loss of the young girl's life.

"I am deeply saddened by this despicable act and disregard for human life. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the 11-year-old child who was killed in this very tragic situation," Dellums said.

The Oakland Unified School District is now calling for a stoplight to be installed at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and 64th Avenue, a district spokesman said.

The school district is calling for a stoplight to replace the stop signs currently posted at the intersection near the school, district spokesman Troy Flint said.

"We're going to be conducting a comprehensive review of all the intersections surrounding our schools," he said. The stoplight is "something that we think needs to be done immediately and we're going to advocate for that."

Grief counselors and the district's emergency response team were brought to the middle school to help students deal with the incident, Flint said.

A family care center was also set up at the school, located at 2845 64th Ave., for people that wanted to bring in their children to talk about what happened, he said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Officer Bellusa with the Oakland Police Department's traffic investigation section at (510) 750-6594.
