Oakland Prepares For Illegal Fireworks Crackdown

Bay Area Celebrates July 4 With Events, Fireworks

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― Oakland Police will be out in full-force for this year's 4th of July celebration, despite past struggles.

"We are going to have enforcement efforts [and] we are going to be working in conjunction with the fire department on patrols out there," said Oakland Police Captain Rick Orozco.

Orozco also added that officers will be issuing a $1,000 fine to anyone who is caught using illegal fireworks.

In 2006, a near riot nearly ended the city's evening festivities, and in 2007, the city was forced to cancel its annual 4th of July celebration due to construction in Jack London Square.
