Series Of Oakland Fires Investigated As Arsons
OAKLAND (BCN) ―
The Oakland Fire Department reported Tuesday that two overnight fires on Locksley Avenue are likely related and may be the result of arson, according to Captain Melinda Drayton.
The one-alarm fires were reported around 11:30 p.m. Monday and both started on porch areas of homes, Drayton said.
The fire at 5325 Locksley Ave. caused approximately $20,000 in damage, Drayton reported.
While firefighters were responding to that fire, another fire started down the street at 5361 Locksley Ave. Drayton reported "moderate damage" to the home, including the roof and the attic. The fire caused an estimated $75,00 worth of damage and the roof will likely have to be replaced, Drayton said.
The Oakland Fire Department responded to a single-alarm fire reported around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of 53rd Street near the Emeryville border, Drayton said.
The fire is considered suspicious but does not appear to be related to the others, fire officials said.
A 23-year-old male resident was rescued by firefighters after "an explosion in a basement apartment of a family home," according to Drayton.
Officials are not sure if he was involved in the fire setting, but he was later treated and transported to John George Psychiatric Pavillion in San Leandro, Drayton said.
A separate and unrelated fire was reported around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at an antique store located at 6519 Telegraph Ave., according to Drayton.
The fire started outside the storage area and also extended to the main building causing damage to exterior siding and eaves. The losses are estimated at $50,000, Drayton said. There were no injuries reported.
The fire is also considered suspicious, but is not considered related to the others, according to Drayton.
The Oakland fire and police departments are investigating the fires.
