An event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake will be held in Oakland on Saturday near the site where 42 people lost their lives after a freeway collapsed.
The event will be held at the Cypress Freeway Memorial Park at Mandela Parkway at 14th Street. It will begin at 5:04 p.m., which is the time that the earthquake struck on Oct. 17, 1989.
Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums said in a statement, "The tragic events of that day in 1989 will forever be etched on our hearts and minds."
Dellums said, "Twenty years later, we reflect on the progress we've made to prepare for disasters, honor those who lost their lives and the heroes who attempted to save them, and prepare our community for the next major earthquake or natural disaster."
In addition to a remembrance ceremony honoring those who lost their lives, the event will include a free raffle of 100 earthquake preparedness kits, free blood pressure checks and an information fair with emergency preparedness assistance.
Among those who will participate in the event are Communities of Oakland Respond to Emergencies, the American Red Cross, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey.
