An Oakland fruit vendor who was killed Tuesday evening when he was hit by a stolen car that was fleeing police has been identified by the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau as 38-year-old Juan Vasquez.
The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. in the area of Foothill Boulevard and 106th Avenue near the San Leandro border, Oakland police Officer Jeff Morgheim said.
Morgheim said Oakland public schools police spotted the car about a quarter of a mile from the crash site and identified it as stolen.
The car contained several juveniles, including the driver, who accelerated after seeing the officers. They followed for a short distance before things went awry.
"The driver lost control, the car hit the curb and struck the fruit vendor," Morgheim said.
Vasquez, an Oakland resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several people in the four-door vehicle were treated, and released. The suspected driver was taken into custody on Wednesday.
