New $190 Million Cathedral Opens In Oakland

OAKLAND (AP) ― A new Oakland cathedral that cost $190 million to build and was under construction for three years has now opened.

The Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland was formally dedicated with a special private Mass on Thursday.

The dedication was set to be followed by a civic and interfaith prayer service set to be held Friday morning.

Built on the fringe of Lake Merritt, the cathedral will be the spiritual home for the Diocese of Oakland, which includes 500,000 Catholics in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

The cathedral is surrounded by an adjoining center of smaller chapels and other facilities.

It was built to replace St. Francis de Sales, which was damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
