Hazmat Spill Closes Building At Napa High School

NAPA (BCN) ― A hazardous material spill has closed one building at Napa's Vintage High School, but classes are going on as scheduled Tuesday morning, the school's principal said.

A shelf in one of the science labs broke before the start of school Tuesday, causing beakers and bottles to fall to the floor and break, according to Principal Eric Schneider.

He said the school is working with a fire team to ascertain what chemicals were involved.

"We're taking all the precautions we can," Schneider said.

Napa fire Capt. Peter Langham said firefighters responded to the school, 1375 Trower Ave., at about 8 a.m.

"We expect to be there for a number of hours," he said at about 8:40 a.m.

Schneider said a broad perimeter has been set up around the building so that no students can enter.

The taped-off structure hosts six of the school's 85 classrooms and classes scheduled to take place in the structure have been redeployed to other rooms, according to Schneider.

There were no reports of injuries.
