SF Muni Ending 'Culture Bus' Experiment

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / BCN) ― The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has announced that it will be discontinuing the 74X CultureBus on Aug. 15.

The CultureBus, which began as a pilot program in September, ran from Howard and New Montgomery streets to Golden Gate Park, making five outbound and seven inbound stops at cultural institutions, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Asian Art Museum, the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences.

"Unfortunately the CultureBus did not have the ridership we had hoped for and the board made the difficult decision in May to discontinue it," SFMTA spokesman Judson True said Monday.

The decision to cut the CultureBus was part of a series of service cuts made by the SFMTA board in an effort to close a $129 million budget deficit, True said.

Further cuts to services will go into effect in coming months, True said.
