Containment Slow On Monterey County Wildfire
KING CITY (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ―
Nearly 800 firefighters are still battling a wildfire Tuesday that has scorched about 1,200 acres of land in the Los Padres National Forest in Monterey County.
Fire officials say the blaze started Sunday afternoon in a steep, rocky region of the Ventana Wilderness about 21 miles west of King City. It was only about 8 percent contained Tuesday afternoon but officials say the fire has not been growing substantially.
The blaze is burning heavy grass, oaks and brush on both sides of Arroyo Seco-Indians Road and the southeast edge of the blaze has prompted the evacuation of 15 summer cabins, said fire information officer Vicki Collins.
The fire burned steadily throughout the day Monday but the perimeter had not spread, a fire statement released Monday night said. Firefighters noticed changes to the eastern edge of the fire perimeter Monday and planned to focus on that area Tuesday, officials said.
Approximately 588 fire personnel combated the blaze Monday, with three helicopters, four air tankers, 29 engines and one bulldozer. There have been no reports of injuries.
No estimated time for full containment of the fire has been announced and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
