Molcajetes Raise Concerns Of Food Contamination
SAN JOSE (CBS 5) ―
The
molcajete, a grinding stone mainly used in Mexican homes is raising concerns of possibly spreading food contamination. Made out of a porous volcanic stone, they are used for grinding down ingredients used for salsas and guacamole.
Health departments in Southern California are now starting to ban the use of the stones in commercial restaurants. Santa Clara and Alameda Counties have stopped short of banning them, but have discouraged their use in restaurants.
