Peace March To Be Held In Wake Of SF Shootings

A candlelight peace march is being held Sunday evening in San Francisco's Mission District following a wave of violence that has alarmed residents and prompted increased police presence.
Participants plan to gather at 6:30 p.m. at 24th Street and Treat Avenue.
The march, which is being hosted by Mission Education Project Inc. and the Lower 24th Street Merchant & Neighborhood Association, is set to begin at 7 p.m.
Marchers plan to head down 24th Street toward Potrero Avenue to Utah Street and then head back to Treat Avenue and 24th Street.
They will then walk down Treat Avenue to 23rd Street and back and head toward Mission and 24th streets and back, ending at 24th Street and Treat Avenue.
The peace march is in response to a spike in homicides and violence, with the most recent incident being Saturday morning when a 19-year-old San Francisco man was injured in a shooting in the Mission District, less than 24 hours after and just blocks away from where two men were fatally shot Thursday, police said.
The double-homicide Thursday night, which marked the fifth and sixth murders in the Mission District in the past two weeks and the 10th and 11th homicides so far this year in that area, claimed the lives of San Mateo County resident Matthew Solomon, 23, and Noel Espinoza, 19, of San Francisco.
On Friday, police announced a number of measures in response to the violence, including additional uniformed and plainclothes officers to be deployed especially in areas where drugs are being sold and gang members are known to congregate.
