The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search Sunday evening for a second sailor who had not been seen since the sailboat Daisy went missing Saturday during a race near the Golden Gate Bridge.
Earlier Sunday, the body of the first missing sailor, 72-year old Anthony Harrow of Larkspur, was discovered washed up on the shores of Half Moon Bay.
He was found around 11 a.m. wearing a lifejacket in the vicinity of Moss Beach by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
The Coast Guard has not found any sign of 67-year-old Kirby Gale, who was on the boat with Harrow during the race that began at 9 a.m. Saturday in Sausalito.
The race was scheduled to end at 4 p.m. that day -- but when Daisy had not returned to the Richardson Bay Marina by 6 p.m., the Coast Guard was contacted.
The Coast Guard then launched a search that included a helicopter, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat and a 47-foot motor lifeboat. At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, officers found debris floating in the water near a buoy about five nautical miles west of the bridge, including wood planks and what appeared to be the refrigerator door from a boat.
The search for Gale was suspended about 6 p.m. Sunday after the Coast Guard determined there was no new information and the probability of survival was considered extremely low because of the water temperature.
The Coast Guard initially estimated the two men would have about four and a half hours of projected survivability time based on the temperature of the water.
